Riding Season Is Too Short. I Tried 7 Pants Before One Actually Worked.

Let me save you the riding days I wasted.

You only get so many good months on the bike each year. And at my age, you start counting the seasons too. Over the past 4 of them, I've tried plain blue jeans, $60 work pants, $150 leather chaps, $400 leather pants, $150 textile riding pants that made me look like a gear ad, $90 padded riding jeans, and finally, these RoadArmor pants a buddy kept talking about.

Every wrong pair cost me rides. Some I couldn't stand in the heat. Some let the cold right through. Some were too much hassle for a quick run to the diner. And in the back of my mind, one bad spill in jeans could keep me off the bike for the rest of the season.

Six failures. One winner. Here is the difference:

1. My Legs Were Finally Protected

This sounds small, but I armored everything except my legs. Below the waist, plain jeans. These? CE Level 2 knee armor and hip pads, built in. No straps. No gap.

The first time I put them on, I actually laughed. Why didn't anyone think of this sooner?

2. I Stopped Losing Riding Days To The Weather

This is how my seasons used to end. Cold wind cutting through my jeans on the highway, my backside numb on the seat by the first gas stop. Or a surprise storm, and a wet saddle the whole way home.

These are windproof and waterproof. The wind stays off your legs, the rain runs off. And when the cold morning turns into a warm afternoon, just open the thigh vents. Same pants all day, no stopping to change.

3. They Look Like Regular Pants

Every riding pant I tried looked like a costume. That awkward feeling walking into the diner in full gear.

These look like normal cargo pants, with the armor hidden inside. Sounds silly, but I stopped changing pants when I get off the bike.

4. Comfortable All Day, On And Off The Bike

Usually by the first stop, my textile riding pants were coming off. Too bulky, too hot, no give. With these, I'd look at the clock and realize I'd worn them all day, on the bike and off. No stiffness. No bulk.

The light fabric moves with you, at the pump, on the pegs, at the diner.

5. I Don't Heal Like I Used To

I didn't expect to think about this. But at 25, a spill meant a few scrapes. Now everything takes longer to heal. A bad knee isn't a week off the bike anymore. It's the season.

Here's how the armor works. When your knee hits, the CE Level 2 pad spreads the impact across the whole pad instead of one spot. Level 2 is the higher of the two levels in the CE standard for knee armor. And the fixed pocket keeps it on your knee, not down your shin.

6. Cooler Than Jeans In July

Then summer comes and it's the opposite problem. Jeans stuck to my legs, sitting on top of a hot engine all afternoon.

Open the horizontal vents on the thighs and you feel the air move through as soon as you roll. Same pair in July as in October.

7. They Go On Just Like Your Jeans

I tried bulky riding pants once. Pulling them on over my jeans in a parking lot, boots off, hopping on one leg.

These pull on like your jeans, right over your boots. Belt's in the box. Pants on, go.

8. Finally A Size That Fits

Your size is your waist in inches, just like your jeans. XXS to 5XL, in a men's cut and a women's cut.

No guessing. Wrong fit? The size swap is free.

9. Riders Are Telling Riders

I heard about these from a buddy on a ride. Over 50,000 riders wear them, rated 4.8 out of 5.

★★★★★

"I got so lucky they came in the day before this ride. I'd wear these pants without the pads just for pants. The pockets and feel of them are amazing. Effectiveness wise: these pants saved my lower body. I only had small scrapes on my knee and shin. Everywhere else you see the cuts in the pants, my skin was untouched. Very very well done EKON. Impressive product."

10. Best Value For What Actually Works

I spent over $700 on pants that didn't work for me: Leather pants: $400, didn't work. Leather chaps: $150, didn't work. Textile riding pants: $150, didn't work. Padded riding jeans: $90, didn't work.

These: $129, the only ones I wear from the first ride of the season to the last.
